The Portsmouth Area Ladies Inc., (PALS) has set up a Scholarship Fund at the Scioto Foundation, Inc., which will offer a $500 scholarship to an area student to assist with college or university costs for the first time this spring.
Kim Cutlip of the Scioto Foundation said in order to be eligible for the Portsmouth Area Ladies Scholarship, an applicant must be a female graduate of a Scioto County high school, have a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 and show evidence of community service and volunteerism. The PALS Scholarship will be available for freshmen and upperclass women. A PALS Scholarship Committee will make annual award selections from a short list of applicants prepared by the Scioto Foundation volunteer scholarship committee.
“Our motto is ‘Making the Portsmouth Area a Better Place,’” PALS First Vice President Carol Mascari said. “What better way than to invest in the education of our young people through sponsoring this scholarship?”
The PALS group of volunteer women plans projects each year, raising funds in order to provide grants to help many nonprofit agencies and organizations. Beneficiaries have included the Counseling Center, the Ohio River Valley Red Cross, SOMC’s Love Your Heart program, Scioto County Children’s Services, Pastoral Counseling Center, Autism Project of Scioto County, the Marsh House, Cirque d’Art Theatre, Portsmouth Public Library, more than 12 local food pantries, Cystic Fibrosis and other causes.
Deadline for applications for the PALS Scholarship is 5 p.m. April 5, 2012. Application forms and guidelines are available at the Scioto Foundation office, 303 Chillicothe Street, or online at www.sciotofoundation.org. The first PALS Scholarship will be awarded to assist with college expenses for the 2012-2013 academic year.
