Chester Malvin Porter, 76, of Portsmouth, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2012, at Heartland of Portsmouth. He was born May 25, 1935, in Amherstdale, Logan County, WVa., a son of the late Lawrence and Grace Ferguson Porter.
Chester was a retired mechanic from Shawnee State Park, where he worked for over 41 years. He was a Korean War veteran, having earned the Good Conduct Medal, and he also served in the Ohio National Guard. He was past commander of the American Legion Post #471, a member of the Post #23 American Legion 40 & 8, UCT, and the VFW.
Chester is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Ann Gray Porter, whom he married March 1, 1957, in West Portsmouth. Also surviving are six sons, Jeff (Joan) Porter of Portsmouth, Ed (Lois) Porter of South Shore, Ky., Tim (Sheila) Porter of West Portsmouth, Mike (Ann) Porter of Ashland, Ky., Chester Porter II and Matthew Porter, both of Portsmouth; a brother, Dewitt Porter of Portsmouth; a son-in-law, Estell Mayfield, Jr. of Portsmouth; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Shari “Sue” Mayfield; and siblings, Hobert and Lawrence Porter, and Pearl Maynard.
The family will receive friends at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Military honors will be conducted by the James Dickey Post #23 Honor Detail at 7 p.m.
