Portsmouth Municipal Judges Steven L. Mowery and Russell Kegley appointed local attorney Marie Hoover as the court’s new magistrate judge last week.
Hoover replaces Margaret Apel Miller, who recently took a job as magistrate of Scioto County Common Pleas Court.
Hoover is also a candidate for Court of Appeals judge in the upcoming election. She said this appointment will allow her to keep practicing law in Portsmouth while gaining judicial experience.
“I am excited about getting experience in the judicial realm. I believe this will help me in my endeavor to become an appellate judge. It will give me yet another perspective,” Hoover said. “I am very thankful to Judge Kegley and Judge Mowery for having confidence in me. They have been great mentors to me as a litigator — now I look forward to them mentoring me as a magistrate.”
Mowery said he is excited to have Hoover take over as magistrate.
“Marie is a good lawyer and a good lady, we are really excited to have her on board,” Mowery said.
He said Apel Miller has served the court well during her time with the court.
Apel Miller could not be reached for comment.
Hoover will be sworn into office following training.
