Joe Boggs, 87, of Portsmouth, passed away Monday, February 6, 2012, at Southern Ohio Medical Center. He was born December 22, 1924, in Greenup County, Ky., a son of the late Hugh and Mahala Chaffin Boggs.

Joe retired after 39 years as a service technician from Sears in Portsmouth. He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, a World War II Army Air Corps veteran where held the rank of Staff Sergeant and earned the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and the Victory Medal. Joe was a graduate of the former Greenup High School and also a former member of the Black Potters Camping Club.

Surviving are his wife, Ethel M. Kretzschmar Boggs, whom he married January 16, 1945, in Chehalis, Wash.; a son, Hugh Richard (Betty) Boggs of Portsmouth; two grandsons, Hugh “Bud” R. Boggs, Jr. and Daryl Boggs; and three grandchildren, Haley, Hugh III, and Jennalee Boggs.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by siblings, Eugene, Wilburn and James Boggs, Helen Davis and Beatrice Schofield.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Rev. Peter Michael officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SOMC Hospice, 2201-25th St., Portsmouth, OH 45662.

Military honors will be conducted by the James Dickey Post 23 Honors Detail at the funeral home.
