The Hoppers, an internationally acclaimed gospel music group, will be in concert at the Vern Riffe Center For the Arts on Tuesday, Nov. 22, to benefit the local Operation Christmas Child.
National collection week for Operation Christmas Child is Nov. 14-21. Operation Christmas Child Area Coordinator Virginia Cooke said there were about 25,000 boxes collected in southern Ohio.
“God has brought in all of these boxes to us. God has also answered our prayers, by this community providing so many boxes,” Cooke said.
According to the group’s website www.thehoppers.com, “The Hoppers achieved tremendous success through the first three decades of ministry — the era of the ‘90s began a new leg of their journey with the addition of Dean’s wife, Kim, as soprano and a streak of hit No. 1 songs including: ‘Milk and Honey,’ ‘Here I Am,’ ‘Anchor to the Power of the Cross’ and ‘Mention My Name.’
“They are fine, wonderful Christian folks and they wanted good southern gospel to come to our area. They share a love for Operation Christmas Child and felt the concert would do two things: it would raise money for Operation Christmas Child and it would be a blessing to all those who would be coming,” Cook said. “We are excited to have this opportunity.”
In addition to radio success, The Hoppers have received numerous accolades, including Mixed Group of the Year from the Heart’s Aflame Awards, Diamond Awards, Singing News Fan Awards, and the SGMA; as well as four Dove Award nominations. In 1998, Connie was presented with the prestigious Marvin Norcross award, which is given to those with excellence in “Devotion to family, service to church, and contributions to the gospel music industry.
Chip and Susan Horr are organizing the concert.
“We have been to a couple of their concerts and we were amazed at the kind of show they put on,” Chip Horr said.
This is the second year Chip and Susan Horr have organized the benefit concert. According to Chip Horr, the day after last year’s concert the group was inquiring about returning this year.
Tickets are $15 and $20. For more information about the concert and for tickets, call 740-351-3600 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.
