NEW BOSTON — Teachers at Stanton Elementary in New Boston are organizing a 5K fundraiser walk to collect money for the school to buy Christmas gifts for under-privileged children in grades K-6.

The event is organized by New Boston Kindergarten teacher Katie Cunningham, with help from pre-school teacher Brianna Mansfield.

“We wanted to get the community to all come together and do something together to raise money to buy Christmas gifts and holiday gifts for our students that are in need,” Mansfield, said.

She said it is currently only to buy gifts for New Boston students in grades K-6 (Stanton Elementary and Oak Intermediate School), but might also extend to grades 7-12 (Glenwood High School) if there is enough participation.

“I believe it’s important that we get out as a community all together to do something to support our schools and our students,” Mansfield said.

The 5k walk is Saturday, Nov. 12; beginning and ending at Stanton Elementary on Stanton Avenue in New Boston. Registration check-in begins at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m.

Applications to participate are available at any New Boston School building, the Southern Ohio Medical Center Life Center in Portsmouth and Wheelersburg, and Preferred Fitness in the New Boston Walmart mall. The early registration deadline is Nov. 9 and costs $15. Same-day registration is also available for $20. New Boston School students can register for only $5. With their registration fee, participants will also get a T-shirt.

The school is also accepting donations to help them buy more gifts for students.
