South Shore (Ky.) Water Works Company has issued a boil water notice in effect because of a main line break for these areas: Wheeler Street, Hammond and James Hannah Drive. Boil water for a minimum of five minutes.

Free screenings
set for today
Free screenings and education for cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes will be available from 10 a.m. to noon today at the Sciotoville Church of the Nazarene, 5409 Winchester Ave., Sciotoville. The screening can be done with fasting or nonfasting. There is no charge for the screenings. No appointments are needed.
Screenings and health information will be provided by the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine's Community Health Program and the Baxter International Foundation.

Vernon School
to be torn down
On Oct. 12, from 2 to 5 p.m., there will be an informational meeting at the old Vernon School. Plans have been made to have the old school torn down and develop a community park on the grounds. The Vernon Town-ship Trustees, along with school administrators, will be on hand to explain what is happening and answer questions concerning the plans for the park. A video of the school will be shown, and the Vernon Over 55 Club will be serving refreshments.
A memory booklet is being assembled and will be given to those in attendance on Oct. 12. The booklet will include a brief history of the school and a collection of memories (and pictures) submitted by you - the students, teachers, parents, grandparents, administrators - anyone who has cherished memories they would like to share about Vernon School. Tell about your special memories or what you remember most. The submissions will be compiled into a collage and copied to be included in the booklet. Submissions can be hand written or typed. Do not send an original picture. Send a copy and include names or comments if you wish.

Republicans hosting debate party
The Scioto County Republican Party will host a Debate Watching Party today at the GOP Headquarters, 409 Chillicothe St. The second Presidential Debate will be shown on a big screen. Art council seeks information
The Portsmouth Area Arts Council is seeking information about holiday-related events taking place during November and December for listing in "A Dickens of a Christmas Calendar 2008." There will be 4,000 calendars printed and distributed throughout the area during November and December. Event information must be received by Oct. 15.
