Alex Dickey, Jr., 81, of Portsmouth, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at Southern Ohio Medical Center. He was born March 4, 1930, in Portsmouth, a son of the late Alex and Jaine Williamson Dickey, Sr.
Alex was retired from Standard Materials, and he also worked at the former N&W Railway Company for 11 years. He was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church, and Teamsters Local #92. He was a Navy Korean War veteran, having earned the United Nations and Korean Service Medals. He was also a member of the James Dickey Post #23 American Legion.
Surviving Alex is his wife, Irene Cave Dickey, whom he married September 23, 1950, in Portsmouth. Also surviving are three sons, Eric Steven Dickey of Los Angeles, CA, Robert Isaiah Dickey and Lawrence Anthony (Mitzi) Dickey, both of Portsmouth; a daughter, Sheryl Ann Dickey of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a former daughter-in-law, Kim Dickey of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Chris Dickey, Ryan Washington, Nathaniel Dickey, Elizabeth Dickey, Gabrielle Dickey; eight great-grandchildren; a special niece, Dorothy Carr of Portsmouth; and many other nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Richard Lee Dickey; a brother, Robert Carr; and nine sisters, Ruth King, Dorothy Samuels, Eula Dickey, Arlene Dickey, Carrie Biggs, Wilma Watts, Lottie Johnson, Elizabeth Thornton, and Marjorie Hill.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Reverend Kym James officiating and interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. The James Dickey Post Honor Detail will conducted military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.
