Born April 7, 1924, in Augusta, Ga., the daughter of the late Arthur McBowman and the late Anna Mae Dorsey, Louise attended AR Johnson Primer of Richmond County Schools of Georgia, and graduated from Bettis Academy of South Carolina. She was a member of Allen Chapel AME Church, retired from the Portsmouth City Schools District.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Albert Melvin; her brothers, Arthur McBowman, John Dorsey; and grandson, Michael Grady.
Mommy Lou is survived by her brother, Walter Bowman; her sister, Emma Lou Austin; five daughters, Evelyn Gallow of Augusta, Ga., Pamela (Leslie) Kay of Pineville, La., Brenda Fontenot of Stockton, Calif., Geraldine (Johnny) Reid of Thomson, Ga., Cassandra (Victor) Block of Portsmouth, Ohio; her son, Daniel Arthur Melvin of Portsmouth, Ohio; her grandchildren, Darrell K. (Stacey) Baker of Tampa, Fla., Monique Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., Jacie' Fontenot of Stockton, Calif., Victor (Amanda) Block Jr. of Jackson, Ohio, Faren and Ramon Block of Portsmouth, Chili and Taj Kay of Pineville, La., Rev James (Josalyn) Reid of Augusta, Ga., Stuyvesant (Audrey) Reid of Atlanta, Ga.; and her great-grandchildren, Jonathan Grady of Augusta, Ga., Darrell Jr., Donovan, Duran, and Dorian Baker of Tampa, Fla., Jade and Janiia Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., Destiny Lewis of Victor, III., Jaden and JonVont Block of Jackson, Ohio, and Arkez Fontenot of Stockton, Calif., Jahri Grady of Augusta, Ga., Maya, Stuyvesant, Reid of Atlanta, Ga., and Mia, Nicolas, and Leon Reid of Augusta, Ga., Erica Hanadrough of St. Louis, Mo.; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Allen Chapel AME Church, 1149 Dr. James F. Scott Pl, Portsmouth at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23. The
