Portsmouth soon willbecome the "Cornhole Capitol of the World" as teams from around the country travel here in attempts of winning the third annual World Championship of Cornhole. Thus far, cornholers from Maryland to California, and points in between, have signed up to play in what has become known as one of the best and most enjoyable cornhole tournaments in the country.
The 2008 event will take place on Second Street in the historic Boneyfiddle District of Portsmouth on Saturday. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. The champions will receive a $1,000 prize and the official 2008 World Championship Belts. Cash prizes and trophies also will be awarded to second-through fourth-place teams.
Championship weekend kicks off with "The Downtown Throwdown" on the evening of Friday. This singles tournament will be the perfect warmup for the World Championship on Saturday. The winner will receive a cash prize. Event proceeds will benefit Mainstreet Portsmouth.
Registration is still available online at www.worldchampionshipofcornhole.com or players can pick up registration forms at the American Red Cross office, Glover Street, or at the Portsmouth Scioto County Visitor's Bureau at the Scioto County Welcome Center, Second Street.
