He was born in Portsmouth, May 8, 1954, to Murvine Mitchell Nelson of Portsmouth and the late Alonzo Nelson Sr. Alonzo was a laborer with the Local Laborers Union 83, and a member of Christ Temple where he was a deacon. Alonzo was a 1972 graduate of PHS.
He is also survived by his wife, Marjorie Elaine Parker Nelson whom he married in Portsmouth, on June 25, 1980; three sons, Nathaniel D. Nelson of Atlanta, Christopher A. Nelson of Far Rockaway, N.Y., Justin B. Nelson of Portsmouth; one daughter, Heather L. Nelson of Columbus; five brothers, Larry Moore of Columbus, Alexander and Leon Nelson, both of Portsmouth, Verlin Nelson of Houston, Texas, and David Nelson of Fayetteville, N.C.; seven sisters, Dorothy Taylor of Portsmouth, Maxine Malone of Columbus, Mary Nelson of Portsmouth, Anna Nelson of Portsmouth, Nora Cosby of Portsmouth, Lisa Nelson of Portsmouth, and Rebecca Harris of Columbus; one grandson, John H.L. Nelson; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Alonzo was also preceded in death by his son, Matthew R. Nelson; and his brother, Ernest Nelson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Temple, with Elder Marcus Bendolph officiating, with interment following in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral in Portsmouth on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour.
