Portsmouth Police arrested two people Friday morning on drug-related charges, narrowly missing their Dayton dealer.

Police arrived at about 9 a.m. to the home of Jeffrey Shales and Karen Parker, of 603 Ninth St., in Portsmouth, and executed their search warrant with assistance by Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Both Parker and Shales were arrested, and three others were detained briefly before being released without charges. According to Detective Todd Bryant of the Portsmouth Police Department, police were hoping to catch them with their suspected drug dealer.

"We suspected a subject from Dayton to be here ... he wasn't at the time of the execution," Bryant said. "He comes here on occasion to set up shop at crack houses like they do. We were hoping he'd be here this morning, but he isn't here yet, or he's either left during the night and went somewhere else."

He said the building had metal doors that opened outward, making it difficult for officers to enter the building. Once inside, Bryant said officers found Parker in possession of crack. Shales also had a bench warrant for his arrest for charges of failure to appear.

Police still were processing the scene Friday morning, and Bryant said more information would be released soon.
