He was born in Henry Co., Ill., to the late Russell and Julia Stoner-Heeren. He spent most of his childhood in Wheelersburg and Sciotoville, Ohio, and graduated from Portsmouth East High School, class of 1960. In 1963-64, he served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S.
