"Happy Trails" come alive June 4 through 7 for fans of Roy Rogers, as Portsmouth takes on a western feel for the annual Roy Rogers Festival. This will be the 25th anniversary of the event, said LaRue Horsley, festival chairman. Cowboy and cowgirl enthusiasts gather for the weekend to view memorabilia, mingle with celebrities and enjoy some western fun. Tourists and locals can have lunch with western stars and top off the weekend with a grand banquet. Dodie Rogers Patterson, daughter of Rogers and Dale Evans, will be representing the family this year, Horsley said. She makes her home in Alabama. Other guests include Dale Berry, Donna Martel, Will Smith, Russ McCubbin and entertainment by KG and the Ranger, a western swing group that will perform June 6 at the Cadillac Ranch in Lucasville. Roy Rogers lived on Duck Run, in nearby McDermott for a period of his youth and attended what was then McDermott High School. His boyhood home is privately owned, but will be open for a special tour beginning at 5 p.m. June 5. An historical marker has been placed in front of the home where visitors may take photos to capture the moments. Events taking place at the Ramada Inn on Second Street include an early-bird reception at 8 p.m. June 4. The hospitality center will be open for three nights June 5 through 7. A luncheon with the guest stars will take place at 1 p.m. June 6, and a banquet with the stars is set for 7 p.m. June 7. Horsley said dealers selling western memorabilia and antique collectibles will be on hand from June 5 through 7, and a costume contest will be conducted June 7. Visitors are invited to watch free movies on a big-screen TV. The Roy Rogers Hometown Memorabilia Exhibit, housed at the Scioto County Welcome Center on Second Street, exhibits posters, magazines, albums and photographs related to the life and times of Rogers, a cowboy legend. This year marks the 25th year for the Roy Rogers Festival and the 26th anniversary of the Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Collectors Association.
