The Scioto Foundation is issuing another call for 2008 scholarship applications from students throughout Scioto County and southern Ohio, as time is running out. The deadline for this year's applications is 5 p.m., April 11. The Foundation anticipates total scholarship awards for the 2008-09 school year to be in excess of $175,000.

Scholarship application forms are available at the foundation office, 303 Chillicothe St., Portsmouth. All completed applications must be mailed to the foundation office at P.O. Box 911, 303 Chillicothe St., Portsmouth, OH 45662, or delivered to the foundation office by the deadline.

When selecting scholarship awards, the Scholarship Committee is said to consider several factors, including financial need, academic achievement and leadership potential, as well as school and community involvement. Students wishing to renew previous scholarships must reapply each year through the specified application process.

The foundation scholarship application guidelines require students to turn in five copies of the completed application, a current transcript of college grades and/or high school grades, one letter of reference from the applicant's school faculty, one letter of reference from a member of the community, one high school graduation photo or recent photo and a one-paragraph biography.
