Two area churches targeted by thieves

Two churches recently have been targeted by thieves.

On Jan. 18, someone vandalized and stole copper wire and tubing from the gas line and air-conditioning unit at Candy Run United Baptist Church, 1700 Burns Road, Lucasville, according to a report from the Scioto County Sheriff's Office. The incident happened sometime between Jan. 16 and Jan. 18.

On Monday, Eifort Freewill Baptist Church, 16038 Ohio 140, South Webster, also reported someone had removed copper from the gas line and removed the gas tank. There are no suspects in either case.

Greenup accident kills pedestrian

A pedestrian was killed Monday, when he was struck by a pick-up truck on Crane Creek Road, according to a report from Greenup County (Ky.) Sheriff Keith Cooper.

The incident happened about 6:15 p.m., when officers and emergency units responded to the scene, where the victim was pronounced dead. The investigation is ongoing, and the name was not released by the sheriff.

Financial report is complete

The annual financial report for Morgan Township for the year ending Dec. 31, 2007, is complete. Call the office of the fiscal officer at (740) 259-9123 for an appointment to view it.

Boil water notice is in effect

There is a boil water notice in effect because of a main line break for the following area: From Shell station in South Portsmouth, Ky., to Firebrick, Ky. Boil water for a minimum of five minutes.

Residents will be notified when the boil water notice is lifted.

SEOLS offers tax service

Southeastern Ohio Legal Services, the legal aid law firm in Scioto and Adams counties, will have free tax preparation days. For qualifying low-income individuals who must file tax returns, SEOLS will prepare a limited number of free tax returns beginning Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Those who are interested in a free tax return, including on-line submission to the Internal Revenue Service, should contact SEOLS at (740) 354-7563 to determine eligibility for the no-cost service and set up an appointment time with the preparer. After January, free tax returns will be prepared on each Saturday in February, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Portsmouth SEOLS office is located at 800 Gallia St., Suite 700. Business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding 12 to 1 p.m. lunchtime.

New trail is proposed

The Shawnee Recreation Trail Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 29, in the SOMC LIFE Center Meeting Room to discuss new developments in the plans for a trail. Interested community members are invited to attend.
