A three-vehicle crash Friday night resulted in the death of a Portsmouth woman.
According to a report by Kentucky State Police Post 14 in Ashland, Ky., the collision occurred at about 7:40 p.m. on U.S. 23, between U.S. Grant Bridge and Carl D. Perkins Bridge.
A vehicle operated by Lora Michelle Coll, 36, of Portsmouth, was traveling southbound on U.S. 23, when her vehicle struck a vehicle driven by Michael A. Nickel, 53, of Mt. Henry, Ill. Nickel's vehicle then was struck by another northbound vehicle driven by Michael Cottrell, 34, of West Portsmouth.
Coll suffered massive injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Greenup County (Ky.) deputy coroner, according to the KSP.
Nickel was transported to Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., where he remains in the intensive care unit.
Cottrell and passenger Susan Cottrell were taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center. They were treated and released, according to a SOMC spokeswoman.
The KSP said it is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash. Trooper Michael Murriell is investigating the collision.
The South Shore Police Department, South Shore Fire Department and local EMS assisted Trooper Murriell at the scene.
