Former Ironton assistant Charlie Kitchen has taken over head coaching duties at West in the latest twist on the Senators' coaching situation.
Kitchen was an assistant at Ironton for 22 years including the 1995 Ironton team that went to state. He has been out of coaching for six years and this is his first stint as a head coach.
Earlier this month Don Gibson resigned over personal and health reasons and not long after that assistant coach Tim Sammons stepped down as well. The resignations prompted the school to enlist football coach Merrill Triplett and freshman coach Chris Dunham Jr. to take over coaching at the junior varsity and varsity levels.
“I heard about the situation that happened here with the coach leaving,” Kitchen said. “I've always been good friends with coach Triplett. I was looking to get back into coaching anyway and I thought I'd take a shot in it. As of right now it's been nothing but positive (experiences) right now.”
Coming with Kitchen to assist at West is Greg Arden, who is also a former assistant at Ironton.
Kitchen said that he intends to return next year as well.
He added that Triplett will stay on as an assistant coach and that Dunham will return to coaching the freshman team.
