Cameron Simmons, 30, 2014 C Maryland Ave., was arrested for assault (warrant on complaint), failure to appear-issuance of a warrant, possession of drugs-cocaine and illegal conveyance of drugs into a detention or mental health facility
Around 1:47 a.m. Thursday, police stopped Simmons as he exited Looney's, at 936 Ninth St., because of two outstanding warrants for his arrest.
He was transported to the police department, and while he was being processed, was asked by officer Jason Hedrick if he had any drugs or weapons before taking him to Scioto County Jail. Hedrick said Simmons told him he didn't have either, so he was processed and taken to the jail. There, Scioto County sheriff's deputy Greg Dunham conducted a search and located two small baggies in Simmons' pants cuff. Simmons was asked if the substance was crack cocaine, and he told deputies it was powder cocaine, and also told them he didn't know it was there.
Honor Justice, of the sheriff's office, said the conveyance charge has not been filed, but in Portsmouth Municipal Court, bond was set at $1,000 for the assault charge, $2,500 for possession of drugs-cocaine and bond was set at $6,000 for driving under suspension. He remains incarcerated.
