SOUTH WEBSTER - Coming fresh off a SOC I title, the South Webster soccer team took one step toward another title Saturday afternoon.
Defense was the name of the game as the Jeeps hooked up with West in South Webster in a sectional semi-final match up. The Jeeps held the Senators to only three shots on goal in the entire contest as South Webster shutout the Senators 5-0.
The win in the semi-final contest earns the Jeeps the right play in the second-seeded Tigers of New Boston on Wednesday in the sectional final.
“We wanted to come out and play at the top of our game,” said South Webster coach Corey Claxon. “Our guys came out right from the start. We scored our goals early and maybe that kind of took the wind out of them.”
The first goal of the game was netted in just the second minute of play when Kyle Phipps booted the ball past the West goalkeeper to give the Jeeps a 1-0 lead.
It was another 12 minutes before the Jeeps struck again. Matt Malone winded up and maneuvered a well-placed ball past the West keeper to give the Jeeps a 2-0 edge. Malone struck again just 4:45 later, netting another goal to put South Webster up 3-0.
With 14:54 left, Phipps netted his second goal on the afternoon, sneaking the ball into the West goal to give his team a 4-0 lead. Phipps' two-goal showing would be his last on his home field as South Webster will not hold home field advantage through the rest of tournament season.
Forty-eight seconds later, freshman Dillan Lewis netted yet another Jeep goal, extending the lead to 5-0 just midway through the first half.
The Jeeps attempted 35 shots on the goal defended by the West keeper while the Jeeps goalkeeping tandem of Jeremy Collins and Brice Patterson only had three shots fired in their direction all afternoon with each keeper stopping one.
