ASHVILLE - Excitement and amazement ran rampant on Wednesday. Only three strokes separated the top four teams, and a trip to the state golf tournament in Columbus was on the line. It came down to the last group with two low scores that shook up the leaderboard at the Division II Southeast District golf match at Cook's Creek Golf Club Wednesday afternoon.

The top two team scores qualify for the state tournament and the top two individuals not on qualifying teams qualify for the state match as individuals.

Unfortunately, for the West Senators they were left on the outside looking in after firing a team total of 331. The Senators finished just a single stroke out of second place behind the squad from West Union.

“We're a little disappointed right now,” said West coach Eric Gray. “We came in third place. This was real great tournament here today. My kids gave it everything they had, I am proud of them. They deserved to get the win today, but things just didn't fall for us That's just the game of golf,” Gray added. “I have fantastic kids on this team. I know they hurt right now but I want them to know not to hang their heads about anything.”

The Senators were led by Matt Simpson with an 80. Simpson was followed by Andy Bond with an 83 and Nathan Brandenburg and Noah O'Rourke both checked in with an 84.

As the final group approached the 18th green there four teams battling for the two reservations in Columbus next weekend. All of west Union's scores were in and the Dragons sat in first place with a team score of 330. The squad from Bexley also had all of their scores in and was in second place with a team score of 332. Simpson and his playing companions from Circleville, Unioto, and Jonathon Alder were on the green at 18.

Jonathon Alder's No. 1 man turned in an 80 that gave his team a team total of 329 leap frogging both Bexley and West Union and knocking Bexley out of the state match. Alder was led by Josh Veith and Kyle Brendal who both shot 80s. Jay Hobson fired an 84 and Carson Foust had an 86 to round out the scoring for the Pioneers.

Simpson's 80 was not enough to lift West into the top two slots and West Union and Jonathan Alder advanced to the state match in Columbus.

The two other area schools competing at the district match were Wheelersburg and Piketon.

The Redstreaks finished with a score of 365. The low man was Jake Nutt and Jon Crace with an 81. Jonathon Blanton turned in a 100 and Eddie Robbins fired a 103.

The Pirates turned a team score of 369. Charles Floyd led the Pirates with an 83. Justin Dials added a 93, Webb Ballard posted a 92 and Andrew Rawlings came in with a 101.

Individuals that played Wednesday included Stuart Doll of Portsmouth, who finished with an 85. Matt Evans from Valley fired a 115, Van Levier from Waverly shot a 111 and Shane Rouse from Waverly turned in a 100. Zach Bukiewicz of Valley had to pull out of the district tournament because of a knee injury.
