Joint committee meets in Greenup

The Interim Joint Committee on Seniors, Veterans, Military Affairs and Public Protection of the Kentucky General Assembly will have its regular monthly meeting in Greenup County, Ky., in October.

The committee meets at the State Capitol each month between legislative sessions. The next month's meeting, though, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Ashland Regional Airport in Worthington, Ky.

State lawmakers from across Kentucky will attend the meeting to hear testimony from several state agencies, said committee co-chairman Rep. Tanya Pullin, D-South Shore. The committee will also conduct its regular monthly business at that time.

Energy assistance is available

Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher announced $1.5 million in federal funding has been released to Kentucky to help low-income families pay for home heating.

Eligible households that can benefit most - seniors, the disabled and families with young children - are encouraged to take advantage of it.

Information on LIHEAP is available from CAA offices or the KACA, toll free at (800) 456-3452. Operators cannot take applications over the phone, but can direct callers to local CAA offices. Families also may log on to www.kaca.org/agencies/find_office.asp for more information.
