FRIENDSHIP - There is just one 18-hole round to decide who goes on and who goes home. It's the reality of high school golf. Fourteen teams gathered at Shawnee State Park Golf Course on Tuesday each hoping to be one of top five to move on to the Division II Southeast District Tournament at Cook's Creek.
West was able to take the sectional crown shooting a team score of 308. The Senators held off a West Union team that finished with a team total of 310.
“I was real pleased with the effort tonight,” said West coach Eric Gray. “All the guys played very well. This was one of our goals, we wanted to be top five, but we really wanted to win.
“This is our home course,” said Gray. “Having a team-full of mainly seniors, I thought we could come out today and shoot a low score and we did.”
Gray feels that his team is not satisfied with just qualifying for the district tournament.
“Even with a 308, they're not satisfied,” said Gray. “They're are all talking about a couple shots they left out there. Last year, we were just happy to get out of the sectionals. I don't think they'll be satisfied this year.”
Along with West and West Union, the Wheelersburg Pirates will be making the trip to Asheville next week after firing a 326. Ironton will also be playing next week, riding the round of medalist Nathan Kearns who launched a 69.
Piketon will have the shortest trip Tuesday as the Redstreaks slipped in the final slot with a team score of 344. Valley finished just one shot out of the district tournament, checking in with a team score of 345.
The Indians did have two players advance to the districts as individuals. Zach Bukiewicz and Matt Evans will both be heading north on U.S. 23 next week to represent the Indians. Evans gets in by virtue of his 81 and Bukiewicz's 86 was good enough to earn him the right to play at the district tournament.
“I wish we could've shot a little better to get out as team,” said Evans. “I'm getting better. I'm better than I was at the beginning of the season, so I'm happy with it.”
Waverly, which shot a 370 team score, also had a pair of players advance to Cook's Creek - Shane Rouse, who delivered an 84 along with teammate Van Levier who fired an 82.
The low-man to make the district as an individudal was Stuart Doll of Portsmouth who offered up a 75 to advance.
The Division II Southeast District Tournament will be held at Cook's Creek on Wednesday, October 3 at 9 a.m.
