Matt McClain scored twice, one by a run and one by a pass as Valley started off the season with a 21-0 win against Huntington Ross on Friday. McClain ran for 68 yards on 16 carries as the Indians ran for 170 yards total. McClain also caught two passes from Zach Utley for 20 yards.

Mike Fulks led the Indians with 74 yards rushing and the sophomore Utley, making his starting debut, was 7 for 11 for 80 yards.

Valley coach Darren Crabtree, however, was more impressed with his defense, which shutout the Huntsmen.

“After last week's scrimmage with Portsmouth, there were a lot of questions to answer,” Crabtree said. “But we played well defensively and we shut somebody out.

“Utley did a nice job for his first start. We didn't have a single player on offense start last year in the position they were in today.”

Fulks capped off the scoring with a one-yard run with less than three minutes to go to ice the game.

Meigs 40, Oak Hill 30

Oak Hill wasn't able to avenge last year's loss to Meigs County but it came close at home on Friday.

The Oaks rode the play of freshman quarterback Jessie Slone who went 23-for-33 with no interceptions and a touchdown. He finished with 281 yards passing and ran for two more touchdowns.

“We're more than pleased,” said Oak Hill coach Greg Phillips. “He pretty much cemented himself that job tonight. It was a close battle (for quarterback) and he just did little things with the football that we thought could give us a chance to win.”

Slone replaces Chase Allman who started at QB for the Oaks last season.

The Oaks had 437 total yards in the loss but Phillips was pleased with the team's effort.

“The kids played hard,” said Phillips. “It's the first time since I've been at Oak Hill our kids played hard for 48 minutes. (Meigs) won a real hard fought contest.”
