Most of us are told, as children, by our parents, to share. The young men that play for Glockner's did not want to share the Del Rice League regular season championship with anyone.
Despite six errors and only 10 hits, Glockner's was able to push three runs across in the fifth frame and added two more in the sixth to capture a 7-6 come from behind win Tuesday night at Branch Rickey Park.
“It's uncharacteristic for us to make six errors,” said Glockner's coach Jeff Duduit. “This USEC team is too good to make that many mistakes (against) and we were very fortunate to keep it that close.”
The win over USEC gives Glockner's the outright regular season title with a record of 14-1. The loss ends USEC's regular season campaign at 12-3.
Phil Holt picked up the win for Glockner's. Holt went the full six innings, giving up six runs on seven hits.
“Phil (Holt) pitched a heck of a game,” said Duduit
Zac Alexander was hit with the loss for USEC. Alexander went 5 2/3 giving up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits.
USEC started the scoring in the top of the first inning when Brian Ramey doubled in Ryan Bloomfield. Bloomfield was then plated on a Matt Mader single. Mader scored on an error to give USEC a 3-0 lead before Glockner's first at bat. USEC added another run in the third inning when Justin Stevenson scored Matt Mader on a fielder's choice to add to the USEC cushion.
Glockner's responded in the home half of the inning. Drew Howard led off with a single and was brought home on an Eric Mains double. Mains scored when the ball skipped away from the USEC catcher and cut the lead to two runs.
USEC built their lead back to three in the top of the fourth by way of an Alexander sacrifice fly that plated Dustin Williams.
Glockner's had the answer in the home half of the fifth with three runs to knot the game at five. With one out Jud White drew a walk and then Josh Duduit and Matt Marshall singles to load the bases. Holt then helped himself with a sacrifice fly. The next batter, Maines singled in the other two runners.
USEC answered with a run in the sixth inning to regain the lead. Glockner's in the bottom half went to work. The Crabtree brothers, Logan and Nolan, both singled and were brought home on a Marshall single to give Glockner's the lead heading into the final inning.
“I'm happy Matt Marshall got a big hit there at the end too,” said Duduit “Matt is a good quality person, and he's been struggling. He got a big hit for us in the clutch.”
A last-inning rally left USEC's Steven Kelly standing 90 feet from home while Holt got Justin Williams to pop out and struck out Jarrod Swords to seal the win and the regular season championship for Glockner's.
