It wasn't the defensive effort Post 23 coach Jack Branon was looking for.

However, he was happy to come out on the winning end. After going errorless against Waverly Post 142 on Saturday, Post 23 committed 14 in two games against Mt. Carmel Post 72 on Sunday but managed a win in the second game of the doubleheader 8-6. Post 72 won the first game 8-4.

Nick Kemper led the offense in game two, going 3 for 4 with three doubles, two runs batted in and a run scored. Post 23 had 14 hits in the game, totaling 21 for the day.

“He (Kemper) hit the ball well,” said Branon. “We hit the ball pretty decent in the second game. We got some key hits, and Kemper had a key double that drove in a couple of runs. Jared Farmer hit a big sacrifice fly to drive in what would be the winning run. We had solid hitting from top to bottom.”

John Harcha, Adam Wamsley, Jordan Russell and Aaron Noel each went 2 for 4 in the win, with Harcha scoring two runs and Wamsley driving one in, scoring another and stealing a base. Russell and Noel each had an RBI and a stolen base. Farmer drove in what would prove to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly.

Shaun Cook led Post 23 on the mound, striking out four and staving off a late Post 72 would-be rally by enducing a groundball out to Wamsley at the end of the game.

“We didn't play very well (in the doubleheader),” said Branon. “We made 14 errors on the day, but we are fortunate to come away with a split. The key to the second game was Shaun Cook on the mound. He was able to survive and get the win. He stayed in the game mentally for us and got the win.”

In game one, Post 72 scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the finishing touches on the win. Wamsley was 2 for 4 in the game with an RBI, and Dustin Cook was 2 for 3. Daniel Armstrong had a double.
