Spring is the time of year when bands and musicians start to fill local parks with a variety of musical styles.

From rock to country and everything in between, the Portsmouth area has a multitude of outdoor musical events throughout the summer and fall.

But the fun is not limited to Portsmouth, however.

On June 6, there will be a battle of the bands at Greenbo Lake in Greenup, Ky.

The battle will start at 6 p.m. at the park amphitheater.

The winning band will get $500, with $250 going to the runnerup and $125 to the third-place act.

All band members must either be currently enrolled in high school or a member of the 2007 graduating class.

Amplifiers, a drum set, microphones and other equipment will be provided.

Bands should be ready to play three to five songs, with at least one being an original.

Today is the deadline to register for the competition.

There is a $25 entry fee and can be paid at the Jesse Stuart Lodge or mailed to:

Battle of the Bands, 965 Lodge Road, Greenup, Ky., 41144.

Band contacts will be notified of their performance time and how many songs they are playing.
