City police charged a 30-year-old Sciotoville man with felonious assault following a stabbing Friday night near Sixth and Adams streets.

Police arrested Steve A. Arthur, of 75 Pershing Ave., and accused him of stabbing Yancy Springs, who was bleeding from two large lacerations on his torso and left arm.

Springs, 37, lives in Columbus but is a Portsmouth native. He was taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

Springs was in intensive care as of Saturday evening.

Arthur was arrested after a non-related traffic incident around 11:30 p.m.

His arrest came after police took him to the police station for questioning.

Arthur told police Springs' injuries were the result of a physical altercation that Springs provoked.

Police did not say what caused the altercation between the two men.

Detectives have recovered several pieces of evidence, including the knife believed to have been used in the crime. The evidence will be sent to the state crime laboratory for analysis.

Arthur is being held at the Scioto County jail on a $15,000 bond and will be arraigned in municipal court Monday at 9 a.m.

The case remains open and detectives are asking anyone with information on the stabbing to call (740) 354-1600.

All calls will be kept confidential.
