PDT Sports Report

The Shawnee State softball team split a doubleheader with AMC rival Rio Grande on Sunday, losing 9-1 in game one before rebound for a 4-3 win in game two.

The loss ends SSU's hopes of the AMC South Division title.

The Redwomen jumped out to 9-0 lead before the Bears scored in the bottom of the fourth. That would be the only run Rio Grande would allow, holding on to end the game in five innings.

The Redwomen's Miranda Laws got the win in the first game, allowing just four hits, striking out seven and walking two. Shawnee State's Lori Harmon took the loss.

In game two, Rio Grande jumped out to another early lead, 3-0, but the Bears would respond in the top of the fifth with four runs, and held on for the win.

Shawnee State's Ashley Speas had an RBI double for the Bears, and Ali Hull had two doubles of her own.

Ashley Keen got the win for Shawnee State, earning a complete game win. Rio Grande's Sophia Young got the loss.

These two teams will meet in an AMC qualifier at Boone Coleman Field on Thursday. Game time is 3 p.m.
