According to Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini, an ongoing investigation involving the rape of a 15-year-old Scioto County female has come to an end following an arrest out of state.
Detectives filed an arrest warrant for the suspect they were seeking, who had moved from West Portsmouth to West Virginia.
Detectives contacted the Glenville County Sheriff's Office. Donini said Glenville officials assisted in apprehending the suspect who resides in West Virginia, according to reports.
Delmel Sperry, 35, was arrested and being held in a jail in West Virginia.
He is awaiting extradition back to Scioto County where he will appear in municipal court to answer to the charge of rape, a felony of the first degree.
“I understand he's not going to fight extradition, so his return could be any day,” said Scioto County Sheriff's Detective Jodi Conkel. “When he is returned, he will appear in municipal court the next available day. If he is returned Monday, he will appear in court on Tuesday.”
Donini said the successful apprehension of the suspect was the direct result of the joint effort between the Scioto County Sheriff's Office detectives, Scioto County Children Services and the Glenville County Sheriff's Office.
Donini said anyone who has any information regarding this case should contact Detective Jodi Conkel at (740) 351-1091. All calls will remain anonymous.
