Reader upset at death of dog, humane agency's lack of response

I am an avid animal lover and nothing pains me more than to see an animal that is being neglected and/or abused. I was deeply saddened when the Humane Society had to close its doors. When I found out that Scioto County would have animal cruelty investigators to help the needy animals in our area, I was overjoyed.

For quite some time, the only thing that we have had is Shawnee Animal Clinic/Sierra's Haven, and although they have done a wonderful job, I know that they just can't handle the overload of animals in need.

So the thought of them getting some help really made me happy. My only wish was that I would never personally have a need to contact the investigators. My wish was not granted.

Approximately two months ago, I saw a situation that I thought warranted a call to investigators. It involved two adult dogs, and one puppy, on Ohio 139, that were chained to a carport with nowhere to go to protect themselves against the elements.

They also had no other alternative except to sleep on the gravel of the driveway, and couldn't even get close enough so that they might gain a little warmth from one another.

Out of concern, I called the investigator. She took all of my information and then proceeded to tell me that she would let me know what happened. Two weeks passed with no word, but I noticed that the two adult dogs were no longer there, so I assumed that the investigator had taken possession of them and left the puppy with the owners.

I called the investigator back a few days later for an update, and was shocked to find out that she didn't even remember me or the dogs; in fact, she had never even bothered checking on them.

I was a little upset, but I overlooked it and told her that I was concerned because the weather was supposed to be in the single digits and the puppy only had a blanket for warmth.

The investigator once again informed me that she would check it out and let me know what happened. Day after day, I drove by and saw this poor little puppy with nowhere to go to get out of the cold and every day, I thought that this would be the day it would be helped. Boy, was I wrong! Because this morning, on my way to work, I was excited to see that the puppy was not in its usual spot, to only look up and see that it was dead by the side of the road!

Upon further investigation of my own, I found out that it had been there for two days.

The owners don't even have the decency to bury the poor little thing. I am so angry and heartbroken.

I understand that there is probably a huge amount of cases that are to be investigated on a daily basis, but it doesn't take but a moment to drive by and verify a story.

I know for a fact that these investigators have done some great things for the animals in our county, but this time, they failed. Unfortunately, the only one to suffer was the puppy. And to the owners of that sweet little puppy, you should be ashamed. You don't deserve to ever own another animal.
