Doris Pyles, 85

Doris Edna Payne Pyles, 85, of Ironton, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 25, 1921, in Lawrence County a daughter of the late Alpha T. “Doc” and Catherine Metz Payne. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil F. “Ike” Pyles.

She is survived by son, John F. Pyles; daughter, Katy Hannan; brother, Raymond “Doc” Payne; sister, Maude Bowen; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren,.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Christ United Methodist Church, 617 Wyanoke St., Ironton, with Chaplains Jimm Smedley and Larry Pennington officiating and interment in Woodland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton.

Faye Patrick, 78

Faye Patrick, 78, of Hilliard, formerly of New Boston, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at a Columbus care center.

She was born June 18, 1928, in South Shore, Ky., a daughter of the late Raymond Evans and Beryl Redwine Evans.

Surviving are her husband, Bill Patrick; son, Jeff Patrick; daughter, Vicki Miller; brother, Raymond “Bud” Evans; and four grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at D. W. Swick Funeral Home in New Boston with Pastor Rick Clark officiating with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Ernest Percell, 87

Ernest Percell, 87, of Wheelersburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Best Care in Wheelersburg.

He was born June 13, 1919, in Johnson County, Ky., a son of the late Columbus C. Percell and Nannie Lykins Percell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Flossie E. Raike Percell.

Surviving are his wife, Billie Jaco Sowards Percell; son, Harold B. Percell; daughters, Barbara Stewart Lee and Linda Kay Brewer; stepsons, Jim, Richard and Jeff Sowards; stepdaughters, Linda Moore, Donetta Apel and Lisa Blevins; brothers, Carl, Bernard and Harold Percell; sister, Hazel Williams; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Vernon Cemetery with Charles Pennington officiating.

There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg.

Myrtle Hyland, 84

Myrtle Hyland, 84, of Columbus, formerly of Sciotoville, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, at a Columbus retirement center.

She was born March 6, 1922, in Prestonsburg, Ky., a daughter of the late Richard and Alice Hicks Harmon. Myrtle. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph F. Hyland.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda Mallia; and sister, Evelyn Haire.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Wheelersburg with the Rev. Matt Hoover officiating and interment in St. Peter's Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Brant Funeral Home in Sciotoville.

Florence Johnson, 86

Florence Birtinia Johnson, 86, of Load, Ky., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007.

She was born Jan. 19, 1920, in Load, Ky., a daughter of the late Ora and Amy Dividson Hannah Johnson. She was preceded in death by husband, Quiller Johnson.

Surviving are sons, Joseph Benjamin Johnson, Charles Jonathan Johnson and James Ray Spence; daughter, Martha Jane Wagel; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Load (Ky.) Church of Christ with Joe Hill and Bernie Parsons officiating and interment in Osborn Cemetery.

Essie Creech, 101

Essie A. “Granny” Creech, 101, of Waverly, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at her residence.

She was born Sept. 29, 1905, in Letcher County, Ky., a daughter of the late James A. and Lucinda Mullins Garrett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fulton Creech.

She is survived by sons, James Ebb, Joseph Meb and Oakley “Buddy” Creech; daughters, Mae Mullins, Gladys Hitchcock and Faye Roberts; 40 grandchildren; many great- and great-great grandchildren.

Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Stockdale United Methodist Church with Pastor Major Montgomery officiating and interment in Salisbury Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Mattie Lewis, 96

Mattie E. Lewis, 96, of Ironton, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 16, 1910, in Alabama, a daughter of the late Herbert Heard and Evelyn Ford Heard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan M. Lewis.

Surviving are daughters, Rosemary Easterling, Jo Anne Roberts and Vivian Pratt; sons, Herbert and Nathan Lewis; sister, Jessie Mae Gary; 25 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Triedstone Baptist Church in Ironton with the Rev. Henry Fletcher, the Rev. Joseph Evans, the Rev. Douglas C. Carter and the Rev. Richard Carter officiating and interment in Woodland Cemetery.

Lonzo Collier, 62

Lonzo Oreil Collier, 62, of Prestonsburg, Ky., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, in Louisville, Ky.

He was born July 7, 1944, in Letcher Co., Ky., a son of the late James Wesley Collier and Edna Louise Collier.

He is survived by sons, Michael, James and David Collier; daughter, Sherry Mullins; sisters, Daisy Heiston, Jenny Sexton and Nely Fey Brown; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at D. W. Davis Funeral Home in South Webster with the Rev. John Baker officiating and interment in Collier Family Cemetery.

Lorraine Gilliland, 83

Lorraine Potts Gilliland, 83, of Jackson, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at a Jackson hospital.

She was born Dec. 16, 1923, in South Webster, a daughter of the late N.B. Potts and Alma Bennett Potts.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas O. Gilliland; daughter, Aleta Mather; brother, Norman B. Potts; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Kuhner-Lewis Funeral Home in Oak Hill with the Rev. Paul Willis Hagen officiating and interment in South Webster Cemetery.

Ruby Ball, 69

Ruby T. Ball, 69, of Westerville, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007 at her residence.

She was born Aug. 18, 1937, in Sciotoville, a daughter of the late John Wesley and Dovie Gillam Sparks. She was preceded in death by husband, Lindsey E. Ball.

Surviving are sons, Randy and Travis Ball; brothers, Orville and Rick Sparks; sisters, Ranie Justic, Frances Wooten, Gertrude Kazee, Johnni Sue Smith and Mavis Crabtree; five grandchildren; one great-grandson.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Yatesville Memorial Gardens in Yatesville, Ky.

Rita Grooms, 54, of Blue Creek, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at her home.

She was born May 10, 1952, a daughter of Ann Lou Colvin Branham and the late Russell E. “Red” Branham.

Surviving also are husband, Gary E. Grooms; sons, Greg Grooms, Darrin Grooms and Germey Grooms; brother, Rex Branham; half sisters, Melanie Young and Michelle Branham; and six grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Beam Funeral Home in West Union with Dennis Grooms officiating and interment in Moore's Chapel Cemetery.

Clarence W. Cox, 75, of West Union, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Southern Ohio Medical Center.

He was born May 7,1931, in Cincinnati, a son of the late Wilbur and Mildred Shore Cox.

Surviving are daughter, Debbie Sweeney; son, Kevin Cox; sisters, Larverna Nehus, Ruthie Baker, Alberta Drawdy and Alice Lawson; brother, Gerald Cox; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Walter Lowe, 79

Walter A. Lowe, 79, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Southern Ohio Medical Center.

He was born May 6, 1927, in Portsmouth, a son of the late Charles and Nannie Mosley Lowe. He was a World War II Army.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Audrey Martin Lowe.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Harris Lowe; son, Gary Lowe; daughters, Connie Hancock and Sally McGlone; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brant Funeral Home in Sciotoville with Pastor Jeffrey Smith officiating and interment in Memorial Burial Park with military honors by the James Dickey Post of the American Legion.
