Down nine entering the fourth quarter, it appeared Wheelersburg was going to send the game to overtime against McClain.
Wheelersburg tied the score at 49 each after hitting a 3-pointer with nearly 30 seconds left in the game. The Tigers' Dante Jackson had other plans, though, hitting a 3 as time expired to lift the past the Pirates 52-49 Power Shootout in Chillicothe.
“Our kids showed some toughness coming back,” said Pirates coach Tom Barrick. “We turned the ball over too much against their defense. It is obviously back to the drawing board after break.”
Cam Miller led the Pirates with 21 points, and Gary Salyers had 12. Jackson scored 28 for McClain.
Wheelersburg drops to 6-1 on the season and will play host to Nelsonville-York on Dec. 29.
