The Police Department is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for last weekend's damage to Greenlawn Cemetery.

Police Chief Charles Horner said 107 head stones were turned over or otherwise damaged. He did not have a dollar amount for the damage.

“How do you put a value on stones that date back to the 1800s?” Horner said.

The damage was discovered on Monday morning, and the Jewish and Christian sections were both affected.

No suspects have been identified, said Horner.

Portsmouth City Council President Howard Baughman and 4th Ward Councilman Jerrold Albrecht suggested installing cameras or motion detectors in the cemetery to curb vandalism.

The recent vandalism was not confined to the weekend. Horner said vandals bent a flagpole in the cemetery sometime on Thursday evening.

He said it's impossible to determine if that was done by the weekend vandals.

Horner said there are two trust funds set up through Desco Federal Credit Union related to Greenlawn.

One fund is for the reward and the other is for the restoration of the damaged stones.

“People can contribute at any Desco branch or drive-thru,” Horner said.

Auditor Trent Williams said there also is money in a cemetery trust fund which could be used for security at Greenlawn. He did not say how much was in the fund.
