The Ohio State Highway Patrol said rescue workers found Rose M. Rigsby, 45, no address, lying in the roadway when they arrived. The workers had to get through several downed power lines to reach the scene.
Besides the OSHP, the New Boston Fire Department, Rubyville Fire Department, Rosemount Squad 12, Portsmouth Police Department and the Scioto County Sheriff's Office responded.
Rigsby was taken to a waiting helicopter at the New Boston Wal-Mart shopping center and flown to St. Mary's.
Further investigation into the crash led to the arrest of her son, Christopher A. McDaniel, 24, of Lucasville, on warrants from Portsmouth Municipal Court.
Witnesses told police that McDaniel was in the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
The OSHP did not list the type of vehicle Rigsby was in, what caused the crash or who was driving.
Troopers are investigating the crash.
The Rigsby incident was one of three the OSHP were called to on Thursday.
They were on the scene of an all-terrain vehicle crash when they received the call regarding the Rigsby wreck.
Police said the operator of the ATV, Brian Nagle, 31, of June Avenue in Portsmouth, lost control while riding down the east side of Rosemount Hill.
He was taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center and was later cited for felony driving under the influence.
The first crash of the evening was at 7 p.m. on U.S. 52 in Nile Township.
Cindy A. Blevins, 42, of Stout, Ryan E. Montgomery, 21, of Minford, and Heather D. Hayslip, 18, of West Portsmouth, were taken to SOMC following the wreck on U.S. 52 near Nile Township.
No condition was available for Blevins.
Montgomery was treated and released at SOMC.
Hayslip was in fair condition at Grant Medical Center. Nagle also is at Grant, but there was no listing of his condition.
Passenger Diane E. Knittle, 33, of Stout, was not injured.
Addresses on the four were not available.
Montgomery was cited for failure to yield while making a left turn. Police did not release any other information about the incident such as the type of vehicle or details of the crash.
