A Portsmouth woman remains in stable condition at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., after getting trapped beneath her car on Saturday in New Boston.

Police said Mary K. Pierce, 43, no address, was driving a 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity at about 11 p.m. when it stalled at Gallia and Vine streets at a red light. Pierce got out of the car and left it in neutral. She then crawled under the front of the car attempting to get it running again.

But a passenger, Paul W. York, reached over from the passenger side of the car and tried to start it. As York started the car, it jumped into drive and ran over Pierce.

The Portsmouth Fire Department freed Pierce and took her to Southern Ohio Medical Center.

The incident is still under investigation and police said no charges will be filed.

Police did not release any information about the incident until Tuesday.
