The focus for many Kentucky schools will be implementing the Core Content for Assessment, the Commonwealth's assessment and accountability program.
In Greenup County, teachers have gone through three days of professional development training this summer.
Superintendent John Younce is optimistic about the upcoming year.
“We're looking forward to having the best possible year we have ever had in the history of Greenup County,” Younce said.
The schools are all air conditioned so the heat will not be a problem, he said.
“Some the things we're looking into are more of the smart boards that we've had in our schools,” Younce said. “We have some more technology with new Macintosh computers, and new library software that connects all of our schools. Our resources have expanded tremendously with the new library software.”
Students are able to access the school database from home with the software.
Another new addition to the schools is a new technology with united streaming video.
“We're making a lot of changes and they are all geared towards enhancing student achievement,” Younce said. “The Board of Education has spent a tremendous amount of money to improve the schools. We're ready to hit the ground running.”
According to the Kentucky Department of Education, a series of steps and processes have refined and clarified the Core Content Assessment and it is now specified by specific grade levels as opposed to grade spans.
The assessment also identifies what students are to know as well as what they are expected to do with the content.
“We will continue to implement content literacy strategies, classroom assessments and curriculum mapping revisions,” said Belinda Forman, assistant superintendent of Lewis County Schools. “We're going to be looking at each individual school, what each school needs and the individual students. That will take most of our time. I think we're looking to another good year.”
