Robert Bays, 40, of 2707 Swauger Valley Road, died after the homeowner shot him multiple times on the front porch with a handgun, Capt. John Murphy of the Scioto County Sheriff Department said.
Bays was shot in the neck and abdomen, according to reports.
No charges have been filed against the shooter, Norman Tackett. His age was not available.
Murphy said Tackett owned the house but did not live in it. He said that he is believed to live at another Swauger Valley residence.
Murphy said Tackett and Bays knew each other.
“I think it was a burglary, but there may be a little more to it than that,” Murphy said.
The incident reportedly happened at about 6:15 a.m.
“Apparently a boy and his young girlfriend were asleep when they heard the front door open and shut several times and heard someone in the residence,” Murphy said.
The young man was Tackett's 18-year-old son, Justin, who lives in the house. Murphy would not release the name of the girl because she is a juvenile.
“The boy called his father, then he and the girl got out of the house and to safety,” Murphy said.
Norman Tackett arrived shortly thereafter and found Bays on the porch with a rifle.
“What are you doing here?” Tackett asked, according to Murphy.
“I'm here to kill you,” Bays answered, according to Murphy.
Murphy said Bays then raised the rifle to shoot Tackett, when Tackett shot and killed Bays.
Murphy said the incident may be handled as a self-defense case and is still under investigation.
