According to the KSP, Sgt. Louie Podunavac, Trooper Shawn Podunavac and Trooper Phil Clark were conducting a surveillance on suspects who were believed to be operating a methamphetamine lab in Greenup County, Ky., when one of the suspects approached a convenience store carrying a tank containing anhydrous, an ingredient known to be used during the manufacture of methamphetamine. Anhydrous is considered very dangerous if not handled properly.
Officials say troopers approached the suspect, Randy Gordon Jr., 23, and he attempted to flee to an awaiting vehicle behind a convenience store. Gordon, and the driver of the vehicle, Ryan Bailey, 21, were then apprehended without further incident.
Troopers say that in addition to the anhydrous, additional items were located inside the vehicle that were to be used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.
During the investigation, the KSP found that the Fiveco Area Drug Enforcement possessed arrest warrants on Gordon for manufacturing methamphetamine second or subsequent offense. Clark then charged Gordon with the warrants obtained by F.A.D.E. and additionally charged him with another count of manufacturing methamphetamine second or subsequent offense. Bailey also was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine. Both were lodged in the Greenup County Detention Center.
Troopers say that during the investigation, information was obtained that led Sgt. Podunavac and Trooper Podunavac to several locations in Greenup County where they say they recovered vehicles stolen from Greenup and Boyd counties, valued in excess of $40,000. A Toyota pickup, a 2004 Dodge pickup, a newer model trailer with a dump bed, and a newer model Bobcat endloader were recovered. The locations of the recoveries remain undisclosed by law enforcement because of the on-going investigation.
Additionally, during the investigation, search warrants were obtained and executed at two Greenup County homes, resulting in the arrests of Eddie K. Blanton, 53, and Chester L. Sagraves, 43. Troopers say a quantity of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a controlled substance were seized.
Blanton was lodged in the Greenup County Detention Center and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, third degree, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Sagraves also was lodged in the Greenup County Detention Center and charged with possession of marijuana.
Also involved in the investigation were Trooper Tony Burch, the Kentucky State Police Special Operations K-9 Unit and other units from the Kentucky State Police.
