Crime Victim's Week is April 23-27

The Scioto County Commissioners have passed a resolution declaring April 23-27 Crime Victim's Week. As part of that, the Scioto County Prosecutor's Office will be setting up an informational booth in the courthouse lobby, and on Thursday they will be planting flowers in remembrance of those who have suffered crime-related deaths.

The commissioners accepted communication from the Clay Township Trustees about designating a piece of property along U.S. 23 near Maple Benner Road as a community reinvestment area. A new Coca-Cola distribution center is being built in that area and designation would allow tax relief for the project.

“One of the big reasons that Clay Township wanted to do that is Coca-Cola was going to move out of the area into either Pike County or Kentucky,” Commissioner Tom Reiser said. “In order to retain those jobs, they had to do some things to entice them to build here.”

In other items on the agenda, the commissioners approved a $2,500 contract between the sheriff's office and the National Forest Service for a deputy to patrol the section of Wayne National Forest in Scioto County. There is a single three-and-a-half-mile county road in the forest. The deputy is to provide aid in case of fire, emergencies and certain group gatherings.

They also passed a resolution for the Eden Park Waste Collection System to be the next project done by the Scioto County Sanitary Engineer. The $1.7 million project would begin next year.
