PDT Sports Report

Minford wasted little time jumping out on Clay on Thursday. The Panthers, though, took all the time they needed to come back.

Nick Blanton battled through early problems and Clay scored six runs in the third inning as the Panthers defeated the Falcons 8-7.

“We just kept our heads and they battled back and I think that's through our senior leadership,” Clay coach Mark Robinson said. “This team didn't give up and came back. They proved something to me.”

Clay committed five errors and Blanton, who pitched a complete game, allowed four earned runs.

Justin Craft went 2 for 3 with two RBI and Steve Phillips scored two runs. Danny Frantz finished with two hits and Drew Oliver drove in two more runs.

Minford's Jared Farmer went 3 for 4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI.

Clay plays Eastern Pike tonight at home.

Boys

Wheelersburg 179, Valley 127, Portsmouth 99, Minford 48, Eastern Pike 18, East 9

Girls

Wheelersburg 120, Valley 106.5, Minford 98, Portsmouth 86, Eastern Pike 52, East 10.5

Wheelersburg swept the Valley track meet, but the host school kept it close.

For the Pirates, it was Jacob Ruggles, Chris Pyles and Nick Warner who shined. Those three combined for six first-place finishes.

Portsmouth was solid in the relay races, winning two of them.

Valley, meanwhile, was consistent, placing several boys in each event.

Valley coach Andy Hall was particularly pleased with his team's showing.

“I thought it was a very competitive meet,” Hall said. “That's the most points we've scored in a long time. Tuesday to Thursday, we've gotten a lot better. I think we have a lot more depth, this is the most depth that I've ever had. I'm just really pleased with the way the kids are working. I think we have a chance to do some good things. I think track in this area, all the high schools, the numbers are up and it's a lot more competitive. At the league meet, we're going to see a lot of good schools.”

On the girls side, three times Wheelersburg had two athletes finish in the top three and the Lady Pirates' consistency lifted them to a victory.

While Wheelersburg won by 13.5 points, almost every event was close, with several races decided by only seconds. Also, while Eastern Pike finished fifth, the Lady Eagles had a first-place finish.

“All of the schools are pretty competitive,” Valley coach Ellen Shope said. “There's some some really good athletes in all of them. The kids are all pretty competitive. You can tell they all have a drive to be successful.”

Wheelersburg's Amber Bussa finished in the top three four times to lead Wheelersburg.

Valley had a good showing by its relay teams and Courtnie Merritt. The Lady Indians' relay teams finished first twice and second twice more. Merritt was on two of those teams and finished first in the high jump and the long jump.

“This was our first night of running relays and we wanted a little more time to work on handoffs, so to get the times we did is really good,” Shope said.
