Nathaniel J. “Nate” Alexander, 25, of Columbus, has been indicted by the Scioto County grand jury on three different occasions, most recently on aggravated murder for the July 6, 2003, shooting death of Jordan Payton, of Columbus, at a Third Street apartment in Portsmouth.
“Witnesses said there was a card game going on and there was some dispute that broke into a fight,” said Scioto County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Pat Apel. Payton died of one gunshot wound to the back.
Police say Alexander has been evading arrest since November 2005 and reports have him hiding in either Ohio's capital or in West Virginia.
“He's known to be up in Columbus, but we also believe he comes through Portsmouth and he may spend time in Huntington (W.Va.),” said Portsmouth Police Detective Jimmy Charles.
The detective warned that Alexander is to be considered armed and dangerous.
“He has several previous charges of assault in Columbus,” Charles said.
Another man, Devon Jones, of Columbus, was also indicted for aggravated murder. Jones is currently serving four years in prison on an unrelated drug trafficking case.
In 2003, the murder case against Alexander was presented to the grand jury, which didn't find sufficient evidence and dismissed the case.
Last summer, the Portsmouth Police Department reopened the case and resubmitted it to the grand jury which indicted Alexander on aggravated murder charges last fall.
Alexander was also indicted on drug charges after he was stopped by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. During a search of his vehicle, troopers allegedly found a large quantity of crack cocaine. Alexander was indicted for a third time on charges of insurance fraud and identity theft, after he allegedly bonded out of the Scioto County Jail using someone else's name.
