Hospitality training is planned

Hospitality training is designed for those in contact with the thousands of tourists who annually visit Scioto County. This session is designed to orient participants to the importance of tourism, to emphasize courteous treatment of visitors and to stimulate greater interest and knowledge in local attractions. Also, participants will learn how to conduct a tour of the floodwall murals.

Portsmouth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau is hosting the training from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Scioto County Welcome Center, 341 Front St. Reservations are required; to make reservations, e-mail portsmouthcvb@yahoo.com or call (740) 353-1116.

A second workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 20.

Garbage pickup is on schedule

Garbage pickup in Portsmouth will be on regular schedule Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 16.

Schuyler discusses cheetahs at meeting

Binette Schuyler, first-grade teacher at Northwest schools, will discuss cheetahs at the meeting of Shawnee Nature Club Tuesday at Hill View Retirement Center, 1610 28th St. Schuyler was one of 20 to be chosen to go to Africa to work/study cheetah conservation. The goal was to implement a participatory and inquiry learning program in the school system.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. with a short business meeting followed by the presentation. Refreshments will be served.

Meetings are open to all.

SSU scholarship deadline is today

Shawnee State University offers a number of scholarships based on individual achievement and financial need.

The deadline for applying for scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year is today. There are three steps a student must complete in order to apply. First, the student must apply for admission to SSU. Next, the student must submit the scholarship application by today, which is available at SSU's financial aid office or online at www.shawnee.edu/off/fa/scholarship.html, where a list of all available scholarships can also be found. Last, the student also must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by Feb. 17. This can be completed online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

South Shore issues boil water notice

South Shore (Ky.) Water Works Company has issued a boil water notice in effect for areas of South Portsmouth to Firebrick, Ky. Boil water for a minimum of five minutes. Customers will be notified when the boil water notice is lifted.
