Downtown ‘treasure hunt' begins

Downtown merchants this month are sponsoring a “treasure hunt” to spur business for the Christmas season.

The treasure hunt will begin Saturday and continue until Dec. 22., event coordinator Allison Kalb said.

Those wanting to participate can get a stamp book at the The Emporium on Chillicothe Street. Then each time people visit a participating merchant they get a stamp. Once 35 stamps are collected, they can be taken to the Scioto County Welcome Center and the participant will be entered into a raffle on Dec. 22.

Some of the prizes include a man's watch, jewelry and an old-fashioned stereo system.

Schaefer hosts Girls Night Out

“Humorologist” Stephanie Schaefer hosts Girls Night Out from 7 to 8 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Southern Ohio Museum, 825 Gallia St. She will share stories, songs and impersonations while inviting audience participation in a fun-filled evening of humor. The show will take place in the Hopkins Theatre. Admission will be $7 for nonmembers and $5 for museum members.

PHS Class of 1949 meets Saturday

The Portsmouth High School Class of 1949 will have a luncheon Saturday at Southern Moon, U.S. 23, Rosemount. Social time will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon, and dining will be from the menu.

Square dance is set for Saturday

Square dance with John Simon Band will be from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Hall, junction of Pond Creek and Ohio 73.

Greenup plans candlelight tour

The Greenup Public Library, 614 Main St., Greenup, Ky., will be the starting point for the Greenup Woman's Club's Candlelight Tour of Homes and Churches from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The library has been decorated by the staff, and trees have been decorated by the Riverview Homemakers and South Shore Homemakers clubs.

Tickets will be available for sale, and maps of the tour will be available at the library. The library's staff will serve refreshments.

New Boston residents invited to breakfast

Mayor Jim Warren, New Boston Eagles, council and staff of the village of New Boston will have free Breakfast with Santa for all residents of New Boston from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at New Boston Community Center, 3980 Rhodes Ave., New Boston.

American Red Cross offers classes

The Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross announces its classes for December.

Adult CPR with AED, child and infant CPR, and first aid will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 10. Cost will be $45. Also the class will be offered again from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 18.

All participants must register seven days before class dates with the Red Cross, 614 Glover St., or call for a registration form at (740) 354-3293, (888) 354-3293, or fax to (740) 353-8735.

SSU hosts career day for students

More than 450 high school juniors will attend the career fair from 9:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at Shawnee State University, 940 Second St.

Schedule includes: welcome from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. in main theater of Vern Riffe Center for the Arts; sessions with professionals from 10:25 to 11:15 a.m. at various sites on campus; lunch and review of career displays from 11:15 to 12:25 p.m. in main gym of James A. Rhodes Athletic Center; and sessions with professionals from 12:25 to 1:15 p.m. at various sites on campus.
