Most teams are defined by these two words, be it a negative or positive. Give in to them, and a season can turn disastrous. Use them for your benefit, and make yourself and the team better.
For a number of teams this basketball season, it is imperative that the latter is the case. Three teams are in line to duplicate the feat they achieved last season - win the SOC Championship. Another looks to ascend the throne that has been just beyond its reach for the past three seasons.
Entering 2005, both divisions of the SOC appear to be strong, with a number of teams looking to knock off the defending champions. In the Division I boys race, that would be Clay, which held off Eastern Pike last season to win the title. Led by 6-foot-7 West Virginia-bound senior Cam Thoroughman, the Panthers are primed for another chance to be the toast of the SOC I - and even more.
“The team is ready to play this year,” said Thoroughman. “We have a lot of pressure, and people are expecting us to do what we did last year. However, we want to get better than what we were last year. We are not wanting to get just to the same spot we were last season, but we want to exceed that. In fact, we are thinking state tournament around here.”
