The furor over Rep. Jean Schmidt's comments on the floor of the House of Representatives continues.

People speaking for the man Schmidt quoted are saying his words were taken out of context. Web sites are buzzing along party lines. She was mocked on “Saturday Night Live.”

Barry Bennett, Schmidt's chief of staff, said Schmidt had been at a Claremont County Marine's funeral in Arlington Cemetery on Thursday, and as she was driving back, she heard U.S. Rep. John Murtha's comments about leaving Iraq immediately.

“Let's say she became passionate about the issue, and as the debate happened the next day, she made what is now her famous statement,” he said. “For the record, she didn't call Murtha any names. She didn't intend to - neither did Danny (Bubp).”
