More than 500 delegates and special guests joined Nobel Prize winner Desmond Tutu, former Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa, and Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold in celebrating 17 years of ministry and leadership of Bishop Herbert Thompson Jr.
The first African-American bishop in southern Ohio, Bishop Thompson will retire from the position Dec. 31.
During the convention, delegates approved measures that will place the Rt. Rev. Kenneth L. Price Jr. as bishop of southern Ohio, effective Jan. 1, 2006.
Bishop Price currently serves as bishop suffragan of the Diocese of Southern Ohio.
He will head the diocese until the consecration of the ninth Bishop of Southern Ohio, scheduled for April 2007, whereupon he will resume his duties as suffragan.
In addition to leading the diocese's 80 plus congregations and nearly 30,000 members, Bishop Price will be the host bishop for the Episcopal Church's national gathering, General Convention, in June in Columbus.
During the convention, lay and clergy delegates adopted a budget for 2006, elected leaders for diocesan committees and passed resolutions supporting Appalachian ministry and the call to unity in the Anglican Communion.
Deanna Cheadle welcomed to area
Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, welcomes Deaconess Deanna Cheadle to the Portsmouth area. Deaconess Cheadle began serving this congregation on Sept. 7 about a month after receiving her deaconess certification from Concordia University in River Forest, Ill. A Lutheran deaconess is a woman who is educated in theology to provide spiritual care, engage in acts of mercy, and teach the faith.
She is an Ohioan with many family ties in Ohio and Kentucky. Born in Greene County, she is a widow with two married daughters and five grandchildren. Her studies took her to Chicago, Ill., and Fort Wayne, Ind., but her respect for and longing to serve the people of Appalachia brought her back home. Deaconess brings a unique specialization to us having completed additional coursework in counseling with clinical skills in marital and family counseling and sexual assault recovery.
For additional information, contact Deaconess Deanna Cheadle at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 16127 U.S. 52, West Portsmouth; (740) 858-3181. Joel Hess is the church's pastor.
