Thelma O. Gibbs, 92, of Portsmouth, passed away Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at the SOMC Hospice Center. She was born Oct.8, 1918, in the Pinkerman community to the late James and Annie Belle Johnson Snyder. Thelma was an Avon lady for 23 years having been the top sales representative in a four-state area and was the manager of the men’s department of the former Mack’s Clothing store. Thelma was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church, was a member of the Crusaders Class at the former First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Daughters of America. Her enjoyment in life was the comforting of others and touching lives in ways only known to them, especially her Hill View family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Forrest Joseph Gibbs on July 10, 1997, with  whom she united in marriage  Feb.17, 1934, in Portsmouth. Thelma is survived by her daughters; Alberta J. (Maurice) Hammond of McDermott and JoAnn (William E., deceased) Darby  of Portsmouth; grandchildren, William J. Darby (deceased), Diana Hammond (deceased), Tammy (Greg) Kuntzman, Susan (Randy) Childers, Vicki (Jay) Jenkins, Dianna Collier; 14  great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Grandma Toggi,” David Darby, Julie Shupert, Billy Mosley, Olivia Williams, Savanna Darby, Caroline Leininger, Wendy Hill, Kerry Gentry, J. Tyler Jenkins, Austin Kuntzman, Rachael Childers, Sean Childers, Amy Campbell and Jason Jenkins; 17 great-great-grandchildren and one deceased great-great-grandson.  Also preceding her in death was  her brother, William H. Snyder; three sisters, Martha Royal, Opal Callicoat and Vivian Snyder.

Funeral services will held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with the Rev. Clark Hess officiating with interment following in Scioto Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from noon until the funeral hour.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
