Eddie Carrier Jr. held off Scott James as they came to the finish line Aug.
20 to win the 17th Annual Fred Dillow Memorial at Portsmouth Raceway Park.
The win was the fifth Dillow Memorial victory for the Salt Rock, W.Va., driver.
The 30-lap feature was the most competitive late model A-Main of the season with at least two drivers
fighting for the lead from the drop of the green until the checkered flag flew.
Tim Dohm led early with R.J. Conley and James trying to get around. Conley bumped Dohm as they
finished lap seven and then spun out of contention coming out of turn two on lap eight.
While this was going on up front, Carrier was working his way from his seventh starting spot to join the
battle for the lead. Carrier was third on the restart after Conley's spin and flew by both James and Dohm for the lead, but a
caution fell before the lap was completed and Carrier was back in third.
On the next restart, Carrier needed a little more time to get to the front. He finally went to the point on
lap 15 with James following him into second.
James challenged from time to time, including the last ditch charge as they came to the finish line, but
Carrier held him off.
While the battle was brewing for the lead, Delmas Conley was carving his way through the traffic. The
veteran driver from Wheelersburg raced many times against Fred Dillow.
On lap 26, Conley saw a gap between his son, Rod Conley, and Dohm and split them in turn three to take
third place. Delmas Conley was closing on the leaders when the lap ran out.
He was the hard charger of the race, starting 14th and finishing third.
Doug Adkins won the modified portion of the Dllow. The West Portsmouth driver has one every modified
feature this season, except one. Adkins had to battle to get to the point. He finally moved around Tony DeHart to grab the lead on lap eight.
A couple of laps later, Jim Barnett pulled into second and pressured Adkins the rest of the way. They
swapped paint on lap 15, but Adkins held on to the lead.
In the limited late model Dillow, Tommy Twinam won his first PRP feature of the season after Audie
Swartz was disqualified. Swartz's car failed to meet the minimum weight requirement after the race.
The race within the race was how John Melvin would fair. Melvin was unbeaten at PRP, but he ran into
trouble in his heat and had to go through the B-Main to reach the feature.
Melvin moved up to third, but needed a caution to catch up with Swartz and Twinam. The yellow did not
fall.
Conard Newman also captured his first PRP of the year in the Dillow Bomber A-Main. He led the entire
way and held off teammate Robbie Lewis for the win.
The Dillow Family obtained sponsors for the race and provided extra money for the drivers, plus several
prizes for drivers in all four divisions and the fans..
This Saturday will be 93.7 The "Dawg" Fan Appreciation Night. General admission will be $5.
