Bridge repair is scheduled
With an emergency contract awarded, contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation will begin work next week on two structures that cross U.S. 52 and Ohio 7 in Lawrence County.
Crews from Civil Construction Inc. will be repairing bridges at the Ohio 243 overpass at Coal Grove and the overpass from Ohio 7 to the U.S. 52 on-ramp to West Virginia, where the beams became damaged after an overheight vehicle reportedly struck the overpasses in June.
Height and weight restrictions are already in place on the Ohio 243 bridge over U.S. 52, in which a 14'5" height restriction is in place on U.S. 52 under the overpass and single-axle trucks are limited to seven tons and semi tractor-trailers are limited to 20 tons on the Ohio 243 bridge. In addition, the exit ramp from southbound Ohio 7 to U.S. 52 has been reduced to 10 feet, and traffic has been shifted toward the inside of the lane.
Construction to repair the structures is set to begin Aug. 9 at the Ohio 243 overpass bridge that is located near the 10.0-mile marker on U.S. 52, and work will continue through late August. Following this, crews will move to the overpass or on-ramp structure where U.S. 52 crosses Ohio 7 at their junction, and work will continue there through mid-September.
Throughout the project, eastbound U.S. 52 traffic will be restricted to one, 12-foot lane at both structures during daytime, business hours, and lane closures will alternate between the driving and passing lanes.
Civil Construction was awarded a contract in the amount of $148,412.71 to complete the repairs, and the anticipated completion date for all work is Sept. 15.
